# The Orenda Coil — Story
### Source of Truth · Hamilton 2092 Guidebook

> **Lineage.** This artifact first appeared in Term 7, *Experiential Design Thesis I · Design Experiment 2 · "Excavating 2125: Speculating the Public Realm"* (Alejandro Hernandez Guzman, Angela Larocci, James March · Sheridan College · 2025.11.19). The thesis horizon has since pulled to 2092 under *Speculating the Tenth / Excavating 2292* — the Coil is carried forward from that earlier provocation as one of four excavated artifacts.

## 1. Canonical Copy

> **Pulled to 2092.** The 2125 framing below is the Term 7 provocation copy, kept verbatim. For Hamilton 2092 the Coil is pulled into the present-tense continuity of the guidebook — see the fiction timeline in §2.

**Title:** The Orenda Coil
**Subheading:** The Sentient Energy Heartbeat of 2125

The Orenda Coil serves as the energy heartbeat of the home in the year 2125. Facing the severe electricity capacity deficit that began in 2029, this artifact abandons the obsolete high-consumption smart-city model in favour of *sentient energy*. It acts as a physical, moving manifestation of the city's energy usage. The device features a helical gear and coil mechanism that acts as a vertical actuator, pulsing to simulate the living rhythm of the home. This kinetic movement creates a continuous physical heartbeat, moving parts of the system up and down to represent shifting ecological needs. Built using sustainable 3D printing filaments, the artifact forces the user to actively interpret their energy consumption through physical engagement, triggering a suspension of disbelief.

## 2. Provocation context & fiction timeline

**Research question:**
> "How can physical, speculative artifacts function as tools to communicate a 'Grounded Optimism' in the face of Ontario's looming infrastructure collapse?"
> — after Malpass (2017): *"mobilize debate and inquire into matters of concern."*

**The crisis this artifact answers — Crisis 2: The Grid Failure**
- **Fact:** Ontario faces a severe electricity capacity deficit starting as early as 2029 *(Independent Electricity System Operator, 2024)*.
- **Implication:** The "Smart City" model — high-consumption — is obsolete. We need **"Sentient Energy."**

The Coil is the direct provotype response to Crisis 2, now re-anchored inside the Hamilton 2092 fiction.

**Fiction timeline** *(TODO — proposed; confirm final year-anchors with author)*

| Window | Event |
|---|---|
| c.2060s–2080s | Orenda experimental / regional deployment across Ontario. |
| c.2088 | Orenda Network reaches universal electricity provision in Ontario; legacy electricity companies gradually lose function. |
| 2092 | Orenda Coil production begins in Hamilton — four years after universal adoption. Manufactured locally by a Sheridan College alumni cohort. |
| 2092–2094 | Early Coils land in Hamilton households; the guidebook's present tense catches this emergence. |

**Entity discipline.** The Coil is one of four distinct entities in this world. Do not conflate:
- **Orenda Network** — mycelium + OI field, city-scale.
- **OrgoBots** — mobile bio-fabrication agents.
- **Orenda Coil** — this artifact, household-scale.
- **Multi-lens** — perception glasses, a separate artifact.

---

## 3. How it functions

The Coil is the **household endpoint of the Orenda Network.** It is not a grid meter; it is a small, local Orenda presence inside the home.

| Element | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| **Input** | Household energy drawn through the Coil's own local bio-processes — it reads the home, not the grid. |
| **Mechanism** | Helical gear + coil → vertical actuator, kinetic pulsing. |
| **Output** | Continuous physical heartbeat. Rate and amplitude encode the house's shifting state, not kilowatt-hours. |
| **Data posture** | All data stays local / organic. No 6G wave, no external transmission. The household's magnetic field is its own. |
| **Interpretation** | Non-linear. The occupant watches and decodes — no dashboards, no numbers. |
| **Effect** | Suspension of disbelief through physical engagement; energy becomes legible as *rhythm*, not *reading*. |

**Function set the Coil carries:**
- **Energy heartbeat** — vertical actuator reading the home's own draw.
- **Keeper of privacy, security, and local truth** — data never leaks outside.
- **Health monitoring** — ambient temperature regulation and well-being signal ("feeling sick? The Coil's on it").
- **Relational arbiter** — household mediator, tongue-in-cheek ("problem with your wife? The Coil's got it").
- **Battery + truth of the house** — energy store *and* information anchor.
- **Host for OI, mycelium, and OrgoBots** — these propagate locally through the Coil.
- **Memory keeper** — a contained vessel of household memory; artificial recall for most, deeper recollection for some.

> **Side speculation (not canonical guidebook content — note only).** Law enforcement has begun using the Coil as a lie detector, sparking a movement. Because every Coil is strictly local, the ethics and mechanics of this use are unresolved. Retained here for future fiction only.

## 4. Origin — how it started

Built in 2025 as a Term 7 physical provotype (see PDF: *Excavating 2125* · p.15 · "The home's energy heartbeat"). In the Hamilton 2092 fiction, Coil production begins locally in 2092, four years after the Orenda Network achieves universal electricity provision in Ontario (c.2088). The first production run is manufactured by a Sheridan College alumni cohort — a discreet meta-wink to the thesis author's own lineage. By 2092–2094 the early Coils have landed in Hamilton households, which is the moment the guidebook catches in present tense.

---

## 5. The ins and outs

- **Feeds it:** the household itself — the Coil reads the home through its own bio-processes, not an external feed.
- **It feeds:** the household's attention, interpretive behaviour, local energy store, and private memory.
- **Material:** sustainable 3D-printing filaments (Term 7 build) housing living biological components in the 2092 fiction.
- **Lifecycle:** TODO — does the Coil calcify / retire like an OrgoBot, or is it a long-life fixture with replaceable coil filaments?
- **Failure mode:** TODO — what happens when the Coil falls still? (pun intended — is silence a signal?)

---

## 6. Relationship to the other three entities

| Entity | Relationship to the Coil |
|---|---|
| **Orenda Network** (mycelium + OI field) | The Coil is the Network's domestic endpoint. A small Orenda Network presence inside the home — not just a readout, an actual node. |
| **OrgoBots** (mobile bio-fabrication agents) | OrgoBots propagate locally *through* the Coil. The Coil hosts them alongside OI and mycelium at household scale. |
| **Multi-lens** (perception device) | Separate artifact. Overlap TBD — the Multi-lens may render the Coil's local Orenda signature, but that linkage is not yet canonical. |

---

## 7. Material form & visual signature

From the Term 7 build photos (PDF p.16), retained unchanged for 2092:
- Sleek chrome / mirror-polished vessel, hourglass silhouette.
- "ORENDA" wordmark on a dark-grey band at the upper collar.
- Living plant (coleus-like, burgundy leaves) growing out of the crown.
- Illuminated purple LED base — coil-glow aesthetic.
- Scale: desktop / side-table, human-scale — meant to sit in a room, not a utility closet.

---

## 8. Voice / field-note seed

**Primary chapter placement:** Ch 03 Residential §3.16. The Coil is introduced in the voice of **Jem Her** (24, bio-computing lab, Chedoke Ravine; daughter of bioelectric-panel pioneer Sarah Her; already the dominant voice of §3.14 "Day in the Life"). Her register: contemplative, texture-first, "reads the house the way I read the walls."

**Placed field-note** (2026-04-14): Jem Her frames the Coil as the shelf-companion to her mother's bioelectric panel; reads relational tension before it surfaces (pulse slows, light drifts violet → indigo, coleus stops leaning for the window); reads oncoming illness a day before she feels it (radiant floor pulls half a degree). Canonical refrain preserved: *"All local, organic, my own magnetic field. Whatever the Coil knows, it knows in here."*

## 10. The three design insights the Coil carries (from Term 7 conclusion)

1. **Tangibility** — physical artifacts trigger *suspension of disbelief*.
2. **Ambiguity** — the *uncanny valley* forces active interpretation.
3. **Narrative** — *data + speculation = public engagement.*

Any HTML integration of the Coil must preserve all three. No digital dashboards, no infographics — the Coil is physical, ambiguous, narrative.
